The Midtown Men: Live In Concert – Fan’s Perspective

• December 14, 2014 • Comments (2)

Written by Fan Correspondents Norene and John Howard:

What a thrill to have THE MIDTOWN MEN in our home this past weekend. Well, okay, appear on our television.  Saturday, November 29th at 7:00pm there was a halt in all activities here on the east coast as many of us prepared to view the premier television broadcast of The MIDTOWN MEN’S National Concert Tour on PBS. John & I set the lights low, lit a cozy fire and cranked up the volume on our Bose in preparation for the concert.  While having seen The Men perform live 27 times, I have to admit my heart was pounding a bit just prior to the bewitching hour; yes it was in anticipation of seeing The Midtown Men on television, but more to the point it was being excited and thrilled for them to showcase their talent to a whole new audience.

Filmed May 28th, 2014 at the beautiful venue of NJPAC in Newark, NJ, one may say we have been waiting for six months to see this project come to television, but they would be wrong.   I venture to say all of the longtime loyal supporters of The Midtown Men have been waiting since attending their first concert – most of us as long as four years.  Up until this time all we had were amateur YouTube snippets to give us a visual remembrance.  Alas, when we make our donation to our local PBS station we will have a full length professional copy of this event and we can relive the great moments in between attending another performance.

We were so very fortunate to have attended the taping of this performance along with many long time Midtown Men fans. It was a great social evening to share our passion with others of the same mindset.  The PBS broadcast was superb!!!! It captured the energy, the voices and choreography of this multi-talented foursome to a “T”.  An added bonus of this broadcast was having the opportunity to view their performance from many vantage points beyond the seats we held.  These men are consummate entertainers; for those of us who were in attendance we witnessed the cameras  in their faces (at times it seemed like less than only a foot away); I swear they could see J. Robert’s tonsils – they were that close.  In addition to the airing of the Live Performance at NJPAC, watching the PBS Fundraiser, we were treated to interviews with The Men to learn more about their journey, to experience their sense of humor and given another opportunity to hear them sing.

As I view THE MIDTOWN MEN’S Facebook page, I see that more and more PBS stations are picking up their show.  We are so excited for them in that a whole new audience is being created for them.  As most of us know they are not only extremely talented in what they do but they are always so kind, generous with their time and appreciative of their fans.  I often wonder how many photographs they have taken with fans – they must be in The Guinness Book of World Records.

Not only do we send our CONGRATULATIONS AND OUR WISHES FOR MUCH MORE CONTINUED SUCCESS  to you – Michael, Christian, Daniel and J. Robert, we THANK YOU  for producing this DVD and CD for all of us to enjoy whenever we want.

In closing this would not be complete without acknowledging the FABULOUS seven member band that accompany THE MIDTOWN MEN performance after performance.  These men are truly talented in their own right and are certainly the best complement to The Midtown Men.

Can’t wait to receive our DVD and CD.

THANK YOU Michael, Christian, Daniel and J.Robert – YOU ARE THE BEST!!!!

Norene & John

PS Through my “magic mirror” I could see Audrey, Frank, Doreen, Anthony, Barbara, Pat, Bob, Tricia, Andie and Catherine in the audience…what fun!

Singing and Dancing Sold Out Crowd In Atlantic City

• November 10, 2014 • Comments (0)

And the crowd goes wild….The sold out crowd at the Golden Nugget Resort and Casino in Atlantic City, that is, when The Midtown Men took the stage Saturday night.  According the The Men, their fans, old and new, were “singing along, dancing in the aisles and rallying us to new heights.

If you were part of that crowd and you have pictures to share, please email them to and I will post them here.  Also, please leave a comment here and tell us what you loved about the show!

To start things off, Steve M. shared his experience with me, along with a few great shots – thank you Steve!

Last night’s performance by The Midtown Men was electrifying and enjoyed by a sold out crowd in the Main Venue at the Golden Nugget. My new personal favorite song and choreography is the Men’s interpretation of ‘Be My Baby’.  Michael takes the song to a whole new level.

Sitting in the same row as us, second row, just a few seats to our right was the one and only Sir Tommy DeVito himself. I did have an opportunity to meet him and shake his hand after the show. He seemed to enjoy the concert and rose to his feet during the final 2 songs.  Also sitting in between Tommy and ourselves was another original four season star, Joe Long, who succeeded Nick Massi when he quit the band.

The Golden Nugget was a great venue and we randomly ran into the guys and various band members in the casinos and restaurants and bars.  Meeting up with other TMM friends is always fun, as well as making new ones.  And of course, the banter with the boys after the show is the dessert of the evening.

More Pictures From the Weekend

• October 4, 2014 • Comments (0)

Thanks to the fans who sent in pictures from last weekend’s Midtown Men shows – keep them coming!

This picture was sent in by Chris LaBonte. He, Bret Bisaillon and Michael Chenkus performed as Jersey Boys at the Palace Theater's "Headlines and Headliners" program 6 days before the Midtown Men. Says Chris, "We came out to see them and it was awesome to think that we were on the same stage six days before singing and dancing to some of the same songs! Great show!"

Peter & Jean Albini saw The Midtown Men at The Palace Theater - they have been following TMM since they first met them in 2005 in NYC.

Please feel free to share pictures from these shows and any others you are/have been fortunate enough to attend. Email them to The Midtown Club – Thanks!

There IS A Cure For The Summertime Blues

• July 24, 2014 • Comments (19)

I was driving to work the other day, thinking about how stressful life has been recently, and feeling a little bit down.  I turned on the radio to try and lighten my mood, but ended up irritated.  I switched to CD, and was immediately cheered by the sounds of  The Midtown Men Sixties Hits.  Before I knew it, I was smiling and singing and, well…happy!  I felt like I’d just had a visit with dear friends.  It turned out to be a great day!

I’ve been listening to that CD every day since, and it got me to thinking…..what songs would I like to hear on TMM’s second CD?  I know it would have to include “Cry For Me” and dare I say a repeat of “Time of the Season.”  I’d also like to hear a little Motown, especially “River Deep, Mountain High.”  Bobby’s “Vehicle” would be a great song to sing along to in the car, as would “Aint No Mountain High Enough.”  The possibilities are practically endless!

What songs would you like to hear if there were to be a Sixties Hits II?  Please share your thoughts here as a Comment on the Club site and your name will entered into a drawing for a Sixties Hits CD.

Street Crew Members Have A Blast With TMM And The NSO Pops

• June 29, 2014 • Comments (0)

“There’s something special that happens when you bring together four supremely talented men on a single stage, couple them with one of the nation’s finest orchestras and conductors, and arm them with the songbook from one of the greatest eras in Rock ‘n’ Roll history.  Add to that a Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, some infectious choreography, and star chemistry—and you have a surefire recipe for a heck of a good time.” (by Derek Mong, DC Metro Theater Arts)

That’s exactly what (repeat) Street Crew Members Heather Powell and Jeanne Fleck experienced this weekend with The Midtown Men and the NSO Pops Orchestra at The Kennedy Center in Washington, DC!

Midtown Club Street Crew member Jeanne Fleck and her son Michael share some hugs with the Men after the show on Saturday night.

NJPAC part 2 – “…oh what a night of entertainment it was”

• June 22, 2014 • Comments (5)

I enjoyed All the moments!  Especially ALL the new songs we put in our special with all our new choreography. My wife who has done ten shows on Broadway said,”You all looked so good dancing together!  You all looked and sounded amazing!”  She was so impressed with the whole filming/concert experience. That is what I am most proud and pleased about is that my wife was so proud of All of Us! bobby

My apologies for taking so long to follow up on the NJPAC “pre-show” post!  I received an email from a friend yesterday saying “NJPAC is still in our minds. It was such a great evening!!!!”  And I believe she shares those thoughts with anyone who was there.  There were so many amazing moments – new songs, new choreography (which the Men made look so easy!) fabulous lighting, Gene Cornish…I could go on and on, but instead, I’ll share  some of the thoughts fans and a couple of the Men shared with me about the show itself.  Enjoy, and feel free to add your own thoughts as comments here!

What a fabulous show!  The Midtown Men are not only great singers but also great entertainers and showmen.  The variety of their song selections is unbelievable…they can do that because they seamlessly switch off each other taking the lead on different songs.  This is not some sort of retrospective show…this is great songs done with more flair than the original recordings.  Pardon me for using a familiar cliché but there is no other way to describe it…oh what a night of entertainment it was. And to think we get to see it again on public television in a few months. David Cace

Daniel brings the house down every time he sings "Cry For Me"

It was the absolute BEST show to date that we have seen!! They were dancing up a storm and doing some fantastic new songs from some of the girl groups of the 60’s that really rocked!! Daniel’s solo of “Cry For Me” was a show stopper, I love it every time he does it…and so did the audience!  Michael’s new solo was great! Sounded a little gospel! Very cool! Christian’s solo is so heartfelt, his expressions just tell a story with every word he sings.  Bobby’s solo is as soulful as you can get!  They do everything so well, I could never pick a favorite! Just when I think I found one, I feel the same way about the next song! JoAnn C.

The show was amazing!! Beautiful venue, amazing lighting, and the guys were at their best— absolutely electric!!  I loved the new music and choreography… great adds to the show. I‘m contacting my local PBS station and demanding they pick it up locally, as soon as it’s available!! Sandra P

Gene Cornish thrilled the crowd when he joined the Men for "Groovin" - he plays a mean harmonica!

So thrilled to be in the audience for such an exciting event for one of the best, most talented groups around, The Midtown Men!!  Especially exciting to be there with my parents, and my daughter! Three generations all enjoying the same music. What an amazing night!

Hard to pick a favorite part of the evening, but some of the highlights, for me, were connecting with many other Midtown Men fans, dancing in my seat, leaping up for multiple standing ovations, and seeing Gene Cornish of The Rascals come out onto the stage to play harmonica during “Groovin” sung so beautifully! Awesome memory from a GREAT night! Tricia R

The show was great as always, and they just keep getting better & better. I love watching them dance! The best part of all is that they are the greatest guys and I am proud to call myself a fan!!! Donna G

It was … hysterical when (Daniel) was relaying his funniest moment and (he) made some mistakes and said “Oh well, they will edit that out anyway.”  Then we go to Bobby who says “Well you messing up just now was my funniest moment.”

Not to simplify things but their concerts are so happy and uplifting.  No matter what kind of a day you have had or what is going on in your world, you truly lose yourself in their performances.  They have the ability to transport you to a place where there are only smiles.  They don’t sing at you but they sing with you.  The ability to include the audience in such a way is a unique gift. Cynthia B

During the filming, we just did our thing, no stops, no retakes, raw and real. The only difference was ten or more cameras rolling and three trucks outside capturing the excitement onstage and in the audience. So many of our fans and friends there celebrating with us like always. Christian

I wish i was in the front row, because you guys were so good that i would have come up on the stage! George

This was my 11th show. It was just as exciting as my first one…I just love them.  Their concerts are always fantastic!  My favorite song of the night was when Daniel sang “Cry For Me”.  He has an outstanding voice!  Of course all the other songs they sang were top notch also. Donna St. J

The Midtown Men at NJPAC…A Powerful Thing

• June 14, 2014 • Comments (4)

Before the show I was enjoying watching our dream crew do their thing.  Pre-production, design and planning were now in real time.  Just like our show itself, when it’s go time, it’s a powerful thing. Christian

It’s hard to believe it’s been more than two weeks since that magical night at NJPAC.  In the days and weeks preceding the big event, it seemed like THE DAY would never come.  Since then, though, time has flown by, but the memories of the night have not faded.

I thought it would be fun to relive the night through the eyes of those who were there.   I’ve gathered some thoughts and pictures from the guys and the fans, and today’s post will concentrate on the excitement of the pre-show events.  In the following days, look for more thoughts and pictures from the show and the post-show exhilaration.

In my mind, there was no better way to spend time before the show than visiting with other fans at the pre-show gathering.  So many wonderful people who I have “talked” to in emails, but have never actually met – I loved them all, loved having this bond with them, and loved sharing the experience with my daughter.  Thanks so much to all of you who came up to the Tier 3 Cafe and helped make this incredible evening even more special! Catherine

I was running around backstage ten minutes before the … show changing and ironing my shirts. JRS

I’m so glad I went (to the) pre show dinner, because it’s not only seeing TMM, it’s getting  together with friends we have made to share our obsession…. I mean passion. Norene H.

(One) of the highlights, for me, were connecting with many other Midtown Men fans. Tricia R.

The Midtown Men Action Figures

• June 2, 2014 • Comments (2)

A few months back I posted a series of articles titled “Our Midtown Life” in which super fan Betsy Simek shared her Midtown Men experience.  In those articles, Betsy mentioned that she and her daughter Alicia and Alicia’s boyfriend Steve “have a tradition of bringing a little something to each show that we hoped would show our appreciation for the wonderful entertainment the Men provide, each and every show.”

Well, the recent show in Newark was no exception, and this time, they really outdid themselves!  Alicia and her helpers Betsy and Steve created these Midtown Men “Action Figures” (I call them) that were a huge hit with the Men.  I can’t wait to see what they come up with next!

Stay tuned for more on the fabulous NJPAC show!
